They have the features of being complex adaptive scale-free networks with relatively flat adaptive landscapes -- much like human brains, which allow us to adapt to almost every environment on earth. It is in the evolution toward such a generalist system that new levels of complexity have been able to arise thorughout the history of the universe. In other words, every system is maladaptive until it becomes universally adaptive.
